The Persistence of Song
art songs of Jonathan David
Jonathan David's debut album, The Persistence of Song, takes the listeners on a journey through the majority of his solo vocal output. The collection of songs covers a wide range of emotions and stories: the rapturous and spiritual Hopkins Songs (Gerard Manley Hopkins), the quiet sadness in Azrael (Sylvia Townsend Warner), the mysterious landscapes of phantom kings in Two Kingsongs (Sylvia Townsend Warner and Percy Bysshe Shelley), the dramatic and heartbreaking Gitchee Gumee, inspired by the real-life tragedy of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Michigan in 1975 (words by Daniel Neer), as well as the colorful array of urban tales and abstract conflicts in The Persistence of Song (five songs set to words by four New York City poets, Thomas Merton, Howard Moss, Bonnie Phelps, and Muriel Rukeyser). Recorded in 2016 and released in 2020, the album features David's long-time collaborators, pianist Trudy Chan, vocalists Amy Bartram, Phillip Cheah, and Daniel Neer, as well as violinist Elizabeth Derham.
