Program Notes
Eyes of Glass is a music-theatre work I composed in 1997 with book and lyrics by Matthew Wilson Smith. It was presented as a reading, directed by Tony Award-winning director, Diane Paulus, at the ASCAP offices in New York City. A central episode in the work is a dream sequence including spoken and sung text, underlaid by a chaconne for solo piano.
For the current work I have incorporated some of the sung passages into the piano part, developed, and expanded the piano material. The piece is based on a 7-bar phrase and contains 21 variations
